Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades, located right in the center of the Aegean, at the eastern Cyclades.

The oldest discoveries in Naxos date back to the Neolithic period around the 5th millennium BC, as evidenced by excavations at Grotta area, north of the city of Naxos and in Zas cave ,
the Cycladic civilization was already well developed at that time, which seems to be launched in 5500 BC and flourished in 3000 BC
The Za Mountain (1004 m.) And Fanari (908 m.)are the highest in Cyclades.

The Temple of Demeter
The sanctuary of Demeter near the village of Sangri, has been partially reconstructed.
The temple is considered very important for archeology, because it has survived in good condition and provides a lot of information about the way structure and architecture of the ancient temples.
In Naxos there are many Byzantine churches. There are churches dating from the 7th to the 15th century. Better known is the Virgin Drosiani

Filoti
Filoti village is located at the foot of Mount Zas at an altitude of about 400 meters, and 19 km. from Chora.
It is the biggest village of Naxos and of all the Cyclades, particularly beautiful and fertile village

It is 28 km from the capital of the island, built at an altitude of between 600 and 700 metersIt is the second largest village of Naxos after Filoti.
Apiranthos is a traditional stone-built village, unspoiled in time, with stone built houses, beautiful squares and narrow streets, paved with marble and within walking distance of Panagia Drosiani (7th cent.) one of the most beautiful churches in Greece.
The village is now a traditional settlement, is developed around two towers of the 17th century,with narrow cobbled streets which feature arches.
Every corner is a special creation of folk architecture.
Apollo
Today Naxos Apollo has developed into a tourist resort with many seaside taverns and cafes. There is a small pier that serves mainly fishing boats and small yachts
West and over the seaside village of Apollo is one of the two ancient quarries of Naxos in which first started the largest art of antiquity, the marble sculpting. .
The"kouros" of Naxos are the oldest in the Greek world and from this ancient quarry of Apollo transported to Delos and hundreds of other places
The village of Halki used to be the capital of the island as well as its main administrative and trade centre, is the biggest olive cultivation area of the Cyclades, 16 km from Hora

One great Greek from this island is Manolis Glezos.
Manolis Glezos born in Apeiranthos on September 9, 1922 a Greek hero of the National Resistance, journalist, writer and politician of the Left
He was arrested for his political beliefs, even sentenced to death three times. The continuing judicial adventures until h5s final discharge by the general amnesty o6 1971 often caused the reaction of the Greek and international public opinion.On the night of May 30, 1941, he and Apostolos Santas removed the German polemic flag of the Third Reich, who was waving at the Acropolis of Athens, literally under the eyes of guards there.The adventurous venture that caused wave of enthusiasm both in Greece and abroad broadcast on the news. This act inspired them the Greeks who were resisting against the occupier and established both as symbols of resistance against Hitler's occupation.
