Trikala



   Trikala is one of the regional units of Greece, forming the northwestern part of the region of Thessaly. Its capital is the town of Trikala.
 





 The climate is continental, with harsh cold in winter and extremely hot in summer. The mean annual temperature is 16-17 C in the lowlands and lower in the mountains.The regional unit includes the town of Kalampaka and the Meteora monastery complex.Trikala borders the regional units of Karditsa to the south, Arta to the southwest, Ioannina to the west, Grevena to the north and Larissa to the east.  


                   The name means 'Three good', good water, good weather and good earth.

 The county has been inhabited since ancient times. samplesPalaeolithic occupation have verify Theopetras cave, where they were tools of the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic, and Mesolithic period (about 130.000 to 8.000 BC).

 Here was born and here was acted the famous doctor of ancient times, Asclepius.In the 7th century Asclepius was deified from the 5th century, to the 4th century. B.C.on  minted coins silver and copper. The coins pictured  one view the nymph Triki ,with speculum and the other Asclepius, with the bar of life and seated together with the holy serpent.


 Trikala crossed by Litheos river ,the name means river of forgetfulness. On the shores of this river, according to the historian Stravonas, was born the first doctor of ancient times, Asclepius.


  Every visitor can admire the impressive rocks of Meteora,.
The Meteora (means in Greek :"middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above") is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece.



  The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage ListOn the rocks of Meteora hermits refuge from the 11th century, who in the invasion of the Turks (1393) increased and created entire state with more than twenty monasteries. 
Cause of oppression, heavy taxation and the misery of the Greeks, as the fertile land passed into the hands of the conquerors. Many residents refuge to inaccessible mountainous areas, enjoying their freedom. 
                                                    

  Koziakas or Kerketio mountain and Aspropotamos river have been included in the National List of the European NATURA 2000 (NATURA 2000).
 It is characteristic that Koziakas considered as the mountain of Asclepius, because from here said was picking his herbs.
