Destinations of Greece: Nestos River -National Park

Nestos river is one of the major rivers of Greece.

The springs are located on Mount Rila (2,716 m) in southern Bulgaria, between the Balkan Mountains and Rhodope mountain ranges.

Its total length is 234 km, of which about 140 km are in Greek territory.

Delta of Nestos

The delta of Nestos is located on the southern border of the prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi.

It has a total area of about 500,000 ha. Considered one of the most important wetlands in Europe.It is a Special Protection Area and Special Protected Mediterranean Area.

Also belongs to NATURA 2000, and is part of the National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which extends from the delta of Nestos to the lakes Vistonida and Ismarida.
Reach biotope consists of lagoons, wet fields, reedbeds woodland.....

The rich vegetation , the beautiful landscape ,every route's scenic beauty, offers unique emotions and experiences.

Crystal waters from natural springs, in various locations, where guests can quench their thirst. Leisure areas with benches, tables and canopies, offer food and rest.The marble rocks of the area, creating steep rocky hillsides many caves, some of them visible from the route, with stalagmites and stalactites.

The forest Kotza - Orman "(Dasochori)

From across Europe only in this forest they found food and shelter so many wild animals such as wild boars, wolves, lynxes are rare, two kinds of jackals, otters, badgers, foxes, hares and often deer.

The riverside forest and the area near the coast ,are important for the reproduction, the lagoons for the immigration and the river for hibernation, for many different species of birds.There are also many aquatic, migratory and endemic birds, including pheasant, that only Greece is in the wild nature.
