Aliakmonas River



Aliakmonas River is in western Macedonia Region
It is the longest river in Greece that stems in Greek territory; 
other major rivers (Evros, Nestos and Axios) arising in foreign lands. 



 The name Aliakmon is a complex and originates from Als (salt sea) and the anvil (anvil).
Aliakmonas is the longest river in Greece and is located entirely in Greek territory with a total length of 297 km





 Aliakmonas river has 33 fish species and Axios 36.
Of these around 30 are autochthonous and other introduced by human intervention. 
Many of these are considered rare and one, mafrotsironi, not live anywhere else in the world, that is endemic.
Many species of birds have been observed in the area of Aliakmona.





 The birds use the area to hosted and spend the winter, such as ducks, either to rest on their long migratory journey.Have been observed 215 bird species, of which 1/3 of nest in the area.


 Over 10% of birds in danger of disappearing.Among them, the Dalmatian pelican and the billed curlew, which are considered among the rarest birds in the world. Importantly, 27 rare and protected bird species nesting in the area.
